A Hurricane’s Trail of Destruction

Following are reports of damage caused by Hurricane Gilbert in the Caribbean since Saturday:
Jamaica--Extensive property damage throughout the island, estimated at $8 billion by Prime Minister Edward Seaga. Roofs ripped from hundreds of homes and buildings. Airports closed. Many roads flooded and blocked. Nineteen people killed. Tens of thousands--perhaps up to 500,000--left homeless.
Dominican Republic--Flooding, possible crop damage. Main electricity relay station down, blacking out much of the capital of Santo Domingo. Five dead.
Cayman Islands--Widespread flooding. Hundreds of trees felled. Electricity and telephone service disrupted. Returning to normal Wednesday.
Puerto Rico--Toppled utility poles and power outages in a dozen small towns. Crop damage due to flooding estimated at $200,000 in western agricultural region.
