The State : Oil Field Fire Finally Doused

The state’s second major oil field fire in five years was extinguished as Ventura County firefighters doused a blaze north of Fillmore that had critically injured one man and caused oil-equipment damage estimated at $5 million. The fire, which started a week ago, is believed to have been caused by a spark from an electric fan used to dissipate diesel-engine fumes at the site. The last major oil field fire took place at the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve in Kern County in 1983 and caused about $1 million damage.
