South African police pulled “Cry Freedom” from South African theaters in July, and now the government has also banned the film’s sound track. The West German-made record, which contains excerpts from Richard Attenborough’s film about black leader Steven Biko’s death in police custody in 1977, was included on a weekly list of political or pornographic books, films and other articles banned by the governments’s Directorate of Publications along with stickers calling for a boycott of next month’s municipal elections and for the release of jailed black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela.
