Passenger Is Killed, Driver Injured as Car Rams Parked Police Vehicle

A passenger was killed Saturday when a vehicle smashed into the rear of a San Diego police car parked along the center divider of Interstate 805. The driver was seriously injured and an officer bruised.
The lone police officer injured, Barry Eldridge, suffered only a bump on the head and was treated at a local clinic and released, Police Lt. Michael Blakely said.
The passenger was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center and died of injuries, police said. The driver of the car was in critical condition at UC San Diego. Their names were not immediately available. A second passenger in the car was uninjured, police said.
The accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. after the police vehicle stopped in the center divider area of the southbound lanes of I-805, at the intersection of Interstate 5. The police cruiser had pulled over to assist a disabled truck.
Police and the California Highway Patrol were investigating the accident.
