Postal Window Services Restored After Cost-Saving Cut in February

WASHINGTON — Window service at the nation’s post offices, reduced in February to save money, is being restored starting today.
Most post offices cut hours by about half a day a week to help cope with $160 million in congressionally imposed spending cuts. The service reductions came two months before postage rate increases were instituted because of a rising deficit by the Postal Service.
The unexpected spending reduction came as part of overall cuts in government expenditures aimed at reducing the budget deficit, even though the Postal Service no longer receives a taxpayer subsidy.
Although the postal window hours will be restored, the new hours will not necessarily be the same as those that were in effect at each office before the closings were imposed, officials said.
Local managers were given the option to adjust hours to suit the needs of their communities.
