8 Injured as Car Carrying Illegal Aliens Overturns in Lonely Area Near Border

A car apparently being used to smuggle illegal aliens into the country overturned near the border Wednesday night, injuring the eight people who were crammed into it, San Diego police said.
The accident happened on Monument Road, which runs between Border Field State Park and Interstate 5, a few hundred yards north of the border. No-one in the car was seriously injured as it flipped after running off the road, police said. All were treated at local hospitals.
The lonely, thinly populated area where the accident occurred is often frequented by alien smugglers, officials said.
Five of the injured were riding in the car, and three others were jammed into the trunk, San Diego Police Sgt. Gary Gollehon said. All eight were believed to be illegal aliens, either from Mexico or Central America, although their identities were not available.
