Gilberto Roman of Mexico knocked down Japanese challenger Kiyoshi Hatanaka in the first round and then pounded out a unanimous 12-round decision to keep his World Boxing Council super flyweight title at Nagoya, Japan.
Roman hit Hatanaka with a low blow after he floored him in the first round and the fight was stopped for 5 minutes. The fight was stopped again for 3 minutes in the third round after another low blow by Roman.
Roman, 26, improved his record to 50-4-1 with 35 KOs. It was Hatanaka’s first defeat after winning 15 fights, including 10 by knockouts.
Both fighters weighed 114 pounds.
