A 76-foot-long dead whale, tentatively identified as a blue whale, washed up on a beach near the southwestern edge of San Francisco. “It appears to be an adult blue whale,” said Dr. Ray Dieter, veterinarian and chairman of the Coast Wildlife Society. He estimated the weight at more than 150,000 pounds. Dieter said an attempt would be made to cart the mammal to a museum, possibly the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Investigators are trying to find out what caused the whale’s death.
