The Nation : Two Vessels Escape From Ice Off Alaska
- Share via
The Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star freed an oil company research support vessel stranded in arctic ice, hours after the cruise ship Society Explorer, on an educational cruise, worked itself free of the ice, authorities said. The 236-foot Society Explorer, icebound for four days with 98 passengers and 60 crew, was in open water after the captain maneuvered the vessel through gaps in the ice, Coast Guard officials reported. While the cruise ship freed itself, the Amoco vessel Shaleen Nicholas had been hemmed in by ice about 30 miles southeast of Point Barrow, Alaska. The Coast Guard said that neither ship had reported being endangered by the ice.
