Beer sales at seven New York state sports venues will be restricted, and alcohol-free seating areas will be required beginning next year, under a bill signed into law by Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The law, aimed at reducing alcohol-related violence at professional sporting events, takes effect Jan. 1. Under the law, teams are required to ban beer drinking in 6% of stadium seats and ban beer vending in an additional 15% of the seats by 1992.

The bill was strongly opposed by the Mets and the Yankees. The legislation applies to Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden in New York City; Memorial Auditorium, Pilot Field and Rich Stadium in the Buffalo area, and Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.
