Big West Roundup : Fresno State Helps to Extend New Mexico’s Misery, 68-21
Redshirt freshman Mark Barsotti completed 15 of 18 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown as Fresno State scored nearly at will while rolling past defenseless New Mexico, 68-21, Saturday night at Albuquerque, N.M.
The defeat extended New Mexico’s losing streak to 12 games.
Fresno State scored on its first 10 possessions to take a 54-7 lead. Fullback Myron Jones, who ran for 57 yards in 9 carries, scored on runs of 7 and 24 yards, and tailback Darrel Rosette added scoring runs of 1 and 15 yards.
Steve Loop added four field goals for the Bulldogs.
New Mexico quarterback Jeremy Leach, who led Granada Hills High to the L.A. City 4-A title last season, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. However, he was sacked seven times, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
San Jose State 51, New Mexico State 0--Junior tailback Johnny Johnson scored 4 touchdowns and quarterback Ken Lutz passed for 233 yards as the Spartans defeated the Aggies at Las Cruces, N.M.
Johnson scored on runs of 2, 1, 60 and 2 yards while gaining 92 yards.
San Jose held the Aggies to 74 yards in total offense, while the Spartans gained 491 yards.
The Spartans, two-time defending conference champions, have defeated the Aggies five consecutive times and have outscored them, 199-16, since the series began in 1984.
San Jose’s Tim Jackson blocked a punt on the Aggies’ first possession. Freddie Smith caught the ball at the Aggie 5 and scored for a 7-0 lead.
