A wayward freighter carrying toxic wastes can unload its unwanted cargo in Britain if it is properly contained and documented, British environmental officials said. France, Britain, Spain, West Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands all refused entry to the ship, Karin B, which was carrying 2,100 tons of toxic wastes originally shipped from Italy and later dumped illegally in Nigeria. The ship, with its leaking cargo, was turned away from Britain last month and now is anchored in international waters off France. Meanwhile, French authorities said that five sailors on the Karin B complained of pain in the chest and abdomen, but that they did not require immediate hospitalization. The rest of the 10-man crew, including the captain, reported no health problems, French authorities said.
