Debra Winger
I have great admiration and affection for the work of Debra Winger (I still consider her Emma in “Terms of Endearment” one of the best performances of the century).
But I disagree with the statement that her only real competition is Meryl Streep. Acknowledging that Cher and Jane Fonda are in a slightly older age group, we still are blessed with Christine Lahti and Barbara Hershey. They both have track records of consistently excellent work and nearly impeccable judgment in choosing roles--even better than Winger.
That they are not sent the best scripts first (yet) or command Winger’s salary doesn’t diminish the importance or quality of their work.
