Vietnam War Foes and Quayle’s Serving in the National Guard

As a Vietnam era veteran, I took note of Del Olmo’s recent column on Quayle.

During those crazy days in the mid-’60s, two distinct groups did different things. I, like so many others, went because I inherited the same vision of service of so many others before me. Meanwhile, I knew that others sought out a college deferment, braces for their teeth, or becoming “weekend warriors” just to keep from going to a place we all feared.

In retrospect, I don’t resent those who saw the senselessness of our involvement, but I can’t forgive anyone who found a way of privilege to circumvent the system we were all at the mercy of and, instead, let someone else take the bullet for him.
