2 Bengals Suspended for Drug Use
Linebacker Emanuel King and cornerback Daryl Smith of the Cincinnati Bengals were suspended for 30 days by the National Football League Thursday for failing drug tests, becoming the 11th and 12th NFL players suspended for drug use since training camps opened.
Both King and Smith were notified that they have been put on the club’s non-football illness list and instructed to stay out of the Bengals’ training facilities until Sept. 30. In keeping with league policy, the substances used by King and Smith were not revealed.
They are the third and fourth players suspended this week. Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants and Terry Taylor of the Seattle Seahawks were suspended earlier this week.
The 30-day suspension is normally for a second offense and requires that a player undergo treatment. A player must satisfy the league that he has progressed satisfactorily in treatment before being allowed to rejoin his team after the suspension is served.
