Middleweight boxer William Guthrie of St. Louis, given a chance by an arbitrator to fight for a position on the U.S. Olympic team, lost the opportunity when he failed to make the 165-pound weight limit.
A member of the American Mediation Assn. had overturned Guthrie’s disqualification for failure to pass a drug test and had ordered the USA/Amateur Boxing Federation to allow Guthrie to fight Anthony Hembrick for the 165-pound spot on the team.
Guthrie failed to make the weight by six-tenths of a pound, said Leslie King, director of communications for USA/ABF.
This meant that Hembrick, an Army paratrooper stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C., and holder of a 5-0 record against Guthrie, will represent the United States in the Olympics.
