A federal judge in San Francisco has scheduled a hearing to settle a dispute over whether a prison inmate has the right to report on prison life for a newspaper. U.S. District Judge Charles Legge set an Oct. 25 hearing in the case of Dannie Martin, a bank robber incarcerated in Phoenix. Martin, formerly an inmate at the federal prison in Lompoc, Calif., wrote an article criticizing Lompoc Warden R. H. Rison that was printed in the Chronicle on June 19. The inmate was placed in solitary confinement, then transferred to Phoenix. Martin and the Chronicle sued Rison and other federal prison officials for allegedly harassing Martin and transferring him in retaliation for his article.
