Local News in Brief : Laguna Hills : 3 Burned in Car Crash Remain in Hospital
Three members of a Laguna Hills family who were burned in a fiery car accident earlier this week remained hospitalized Thursday in San Diego.
Steven Dunham, 34, and his 3-year-old daughter, Amanda, were in critical condition in the burn unit at the UC San Diego Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said Thursday. Dunham’s wife, Cheryl, 31, remained in fair condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit. All three had skin-graft surgery Thursday, the supervisor said.
The Dunhams suffered second- and third-degree burns over 25% to 30% of their bodies Tuesday after the gas tank in their van exploded when the van was rear-ended by another vehicle during rush-hour traffic on Interstate 5 just north of La Jolla.
The couple and their daughter managed to escape from the van. A second child, Andrew, 5, was trapped in the burning vehicle and died.
