Market in Southeast to Close Sunday, Reopen as Price Club
Gateway Marketplace--the largest retail operation to open in Southeast San Diego in more than 10 years--will close Sunday to begin renovations for a Price Club, a Marketplace board member said Wednesday.
After being open for nine months, the store announced its closure in early August. The announcement coincided with an agreement between the Price Co. and the San Diego College of Retailing to turn the facility into a members-only Price Club.
The exact date Marketplace would close was unknown until Wednesday. As part of the agreement between the college--owners of the store--and the Price Co., Marketplace employees are being assigned to similar jobs at one of two San Diego-area Price Clubs until renovations are completed on the new store.
When Marketplace opened, it was expected to play a large role in the revitalization of Southeast San Diego by providing jobs and a badly needed supermarket.
The decision to close the store came after officials realized that the store wasn’t getting the kind of support it needed from the community for survival, Jim Cahill, Marketplace board member, said. “We were losing a significant amount of money, and we’re a long way from breaking even,” he said in early August.
Jean Colston, director of the college, said she expects the new store to open by February, if not before.
