Local News in Brief : More Radar Patrols on Mulholland Highway

In an effort to slow weekend motorcyclists who hold timed races on Mulholland Highway, county supervisors have arranged for two law enforcement agencies to increase radar patrols there.
Extra surveillance by the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is expected to begin soon, county officials said.
The supervisors Tuesday also authorized a Public Works Department radar survey of speeds reached by the sleek, high-powered motorcycles, which regularly draw crowds of spectators on Sundays. The motorcycles have been involved in numerous accidents, a spokesman for Supervisor Mike Antonovich said.
A similar problem existed on Kanan Dume Road and Angeles Crest Highway before extra radar patrols were added, spokesman Dawson Oppenheimer said.
“Conventional law enforcement does not do the job out there,” he said. “The only way to apprehend them is through radar enforcement, where someone upstream can alert someone downstream that they are coming.”
