Avalon City Manager John Longley is leaving Catalina Island to become city manager of Marina, a city of 27,000 in the Monterey Bay area.
Marina Mayor George Takahashi said Longley’s selection was unanimously approved by the City Council on Wednesday.
Longley was the “most impressive” of the 81 candidates for the position, which pays about $54,000 a year plus benefits, Takahashi said. The Avalon city manager’s job pays about $52,000 annually, Longley said.
Longley will leave Avalon on Oct. 21, when his contract with the city expires, he said.
Longley, 40, had served as Avalon city manager for 6 1/2 years, beginning in 1980. In 1982, he left Avalon to work as city manager in San Joaquin but returned in 1984, he said. He had previously worked for the cities of Greenfield, Farmersville and Rio Vista.
Avalon Mayor Hugh T. (Bud) Smith said the city has begun a search for Longley’s replacement.
