Last S. Africans Out of Angola

RUNDU, Namibia — The last South African troops withdrew today from Angola after fighting for more than a year in support of anti-Marxist guerrillas.
The armed forces chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Ian Gleeson, said at a ceremony that nearly 1,000 soldiers crossed into Namibia (formerly South-West Africa) during the day as part of a regional peace accord. “As of this moment, we are out of Angola,” Gleeson said. The pullout from Angola is part of a cease-fire agreement that is intended to clear the way for withdrawal of about 50,000 Cuban troops from Angola and independence for Namibia.
