Hundreds Ring Sidney Harbor to View Whale

SYDNEY, Australia — Hundreds of people jammed cliffs overlooking the beach Monday when a 46-foot Southern Right whale swam into historic Botany Bay, apparently to give birth.
The rare sight caused swimmers, surfboarders and divers to crowd the area to get a closer look.
Wildlife officers imposed a 200-yard restriction zone around the 83-ton animal, fearing the activity would antagonize it.
“She has been very tolerant, gentle and caring, but she . . . could be feeling sensitive, particularly if she’s about to calve,” a spokeswoman for the National Parks and Wildlife Service said.
