A wicker basket sitting next to a gas-powered water heater ignited in the garage of a Laguna Niguel home Wednesday night, causing $60,000 damage, fire officials said.
“This is a classic case of a (flammable) object too close to a heat source,” county fire spokeswoman Kathleen Cha said.
The fire, which broke out about 8 p.m., caused $35,000 in structural damage and $25,000 damage to contents of the garage, including a 1984 Peugeot.
The resident of the house, in the 24000 block of Via Estudio, was home when the fire started and alerted firefighters immediately, Cha said.
