Heat Blankets Plains, East Coast

A stifling heat wave stretched from the Plains to the East Coast today, driving tourists indoors in the nation’s capital and straining power in New England, where one radio station broadcast a snowstorm warning for a lark.
By early afternoon, the temperature climbed to 96 degrees in St. Louis; Washington hit 95 degrees, and Philadelphia also had 95 degrees, which tied a record high for the day set 41 years ago. It was 92 in Boston and 91 in Cincinnati and New York.
