The county’s Korean-American community will celebrate Korean Independence Day and the coming Seoul Olympics on Sunday at Mile Square Park.
Events begin at 10 a.m. with a demonstration of martial arts, including Tae Kwon Do, and continue to 7 p.m. with a children’s art contest, folk dances and other activities, said Yunhyi Weems, director for the Korean Assn. of Orange County, sponsor of the event.
Lt. Gov. Leo T. McCarthy will be the keynote speaker at a brief ceremony at 2:30 p.m., Weems said.
The event celebrates the selection of Seoul as the site for the 1988 Olympics and also Korea’s independence from Japan’s 36-year rule. Japan took control of Korea in 1910, including management of Korean businesses, but lost the territory after World War II.
