Montreal Expos pitcher Floyd Youmans admitted publicly for the first time that he had used cocaine and said he hoped fans and teammates will give him another chance to prove himself.
Youmans was suspended for drug use on June 25 by commissioner Peter Ueberroth. That suspension is conditionally set to end Aug. 24.
The 23-year-old pitcher wept through most of a 30-minute news conference designed to “clear the air.”
He first tried to sidestep questions about drug use, saying his biggest problem has been alchohol. But when asked directly whether he had ever used cocaine, he replied, “Yes I have--the last time was when I was suspended.”
