F. W. Woolworth Co. reported a 16% gain in second-quarter net income to $43 million, compared to a year ago. Sales grew 13% to $1.9 billion. The New York retailer said its performance was aided by its expansion into specialty stores, where sales were up 25%, while general merchandise sales increased 7%.
