U.N. Leader Says He’s Skeptical of Reports in Press

UNITED NATIONS — Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said Tuesday that he has learned to be skeptical about what he reads in the newspapers.
“I have to be very careful about these public statements or about the versions of statements by the papers,” Perez de Cuellar said in answer to a reporter’s question about a statement attributed to Iranian President Ali Khamenei.
“Sometimes, you know, they don’t reflect exactly the thinking of the leaders who address the press.”
Khamenei was reported to have said on Tehran Radio that he had great doubts that peace could result from the Security Council’s cease-fire Resolution 598.
Perez de Cuellar declined to comment further.
