Smith-Richards Place Second in Nationals

The fifth-seeded doubles tandem of Thousand Oaks’ Kirstin Smith and Laura Richards of San Diego, who upset the top-seeded team in the semifinals, lost in the championship match of the girls’ 16-and-under U. S. Tennis Assn. National Clay Court Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., on Saturday.
Richards and Smith--who will be a senior at Thousand Oaks High in the fall--lost to Veena Prabhakar of Bonita, Calif., and Alixandra Creek of Rochester, N.Y., 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to finish second.
Richards and Smith defeated top-seeded Audra Keller and Taylor Holden in Friday, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, to reach the final.
