Fires burned 310 acres of brushland near two popular Southern California recreation areas, but firefighters doused both before the flames posed a threat to vacationers or structures. A blaze near Castaic Lake consumed 160 acres of brush in hilly, rocky terrain, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman said. About 100 miles to the southeast, state Department of Forestry firefighters battled a fast-moving blaze about six miles north of Lake Elsinore. The fire, which was 90% contained at 6 p.m. Saturday, burned 150 acres of dry brush. While working on the Lake Elsinore fire, an air crew spotted a small fire to the southwest on the Ortega Highway mountain range. It was also quickly contained.
