British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has stepped into a controversy dividing the Church of England and backed the ordination of women as priests. British newspapers quoted her as saying, “I personally think that there will be women in the priesthood, and I do not myself find it at odds with the Christian doctrine, although I accept that some people do.” More than 500 Anglican bishops attending a conference in Canterbury will vote Monday on whether women should be ordained.
