“HOMAGE TO JOHN COLTRANE.� Dave Liebman. Owl 046. Soprano saxophonist Liebman’s tribute album wisely focuses on Coltrane the composer rather than attempting to emulate the sonic punch of the late saxophonist’s famed quartet. The acoustic side shines most brightly on the softer segments of “Crescent� and “Joy/Selflessness� that aren’t marred by Adam Nussbaum’s intrusive drumming; the electric side usually skirts New Age nebulosity to achieve an atmospheric airiness resembling early Weather Report. Liebman’s solos are limber and inventive. 3 stars.
