Morocco’s Said Aouita scored a decisive victory over Britain’s Tom McKean in the 1,000 meters at a track meet in Edinburgh, Scotland, for his 56th straight victory.
Aouita, who two days earlier had run his fastest 800 meters in five years, was timed in 2 minutes 18.32 seconds. Britain’s David Sharpe finished second in 2:19.89, and McKean, incurring his first defeat of the season, was third in 2:20.30.
“I will now definitely go for both the 800 and 1,500 golds in Seoul,” said Aouita, who holds four world records and is the reigning Olympic and World 5,000-meter champion.
Middle-distance runner Paula Ivan of Romania, who won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters in the World University Games last year, easily beat the field in the women’s mile in 4:25.80--finishing more than six seconds ahead of American Regina Jacobs.
Only Mary Decker Slaney has run faster than Ivan at 1,500 meters this season.
Other strong performances, though wind-aided:
--Colin Jackson of Britain, bronze medalist in last year’s World Championships, won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.21 seconds.
--Butch Reynolds, whose 43.93 in the U.S. Olympic trials last week was the second fastest 400-meter time in history and the fastest at sea level, easily won the 400 in 45.26 seconds.
--Two-time World champion Calvin Smith won the 200 meters in 20.57.
