Pirate’s Kernel Wins Matron Stakes by Nose

Pirate’s Kernel beat Flying Hill by a nose Friday night at Los Alamitos to win the $52,200 Orange County Matron Stakes.
The victory was the fourth of the night for jockey Corey Black, who won three races Thursday night.
Pirate’s Kernel held on in the stretch to win in 1:17 1/5 for the 6 1/2-furlong race. The victory was worth $29,700 for Pirate’s Kernel, who returned $13, $5.60 and $4.40. Flying Hill paid $3.40 and $3.20 while Sweet Tryst returned $5. The $5 exacta combination paid $147.50.
