Money Takes Fun Out of Competition

Contrary to what Jim Murray says (July 22), the real problem is not that baseball, football, tennis and a half-dozen other sports are not self-policed.
The big problem is money. We who are in amateur sports love to be “sporting about it.” I play tennis every day. I would not even dream of cheating by making a wrong call. If I have any doubts, I usually say, “Take it over.”
All of the so-called pros were amateurs first. They also learned to be honest, but as soon as money reared its ugly head, the play was not for fun.
There are ways of electronically calling many shots in many games, but money is still the root of the problem in the pro game.
