FAA Orders Special Brake Inspections on Long-Range DC-10s

WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday ordered a special inspection of landing gear brakes on long-range McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft and directed that the brakes be replaced if they exceed prescribed wear limits.
The order was issued in response to a May 21 accident involving an American Airlines DC-10, in which eight of the plane’s 10 brakes failed when the pilot aborted his takeoff, causing the plane to skid 1,000 feet beyond the runway at the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport.
The three crew members in the cockpit and five of the 240 passengers were injured and the plane was heavily damaged.
