Arts and Crafts

We read with considerable interest Karen Newell Young’s story concerning stores that feature folk arts and crafts (July 22). We were, however, both surprised and dismayed that Young neglected to mention the United Nations Assn. Gift Shop at 2428 N. Grand Ave. in Santa Ana.

Not only do we carry an extensive collection of imported handicrafts, art objects and other ethnic items, we also offer a complete line of UNICEF greeting cards, calendars, books and puzzles.

Visitors to our shop will find wall hangings from Peru, Poland, Kenya and China; Soviet carved soapstone figures, matroishkas (nested wooden dolls) and exquisite lacquered boxes; masks from Indonesia, New Guinea and elsewhere; rugs from Tunisia and Albania; wall hangings, baskets, brassware, ceramics, glassware, children’s books, toys and ethnic jewelry--all of worldwide origin.

We are a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers. Proceeds from UNICEF sales go directly to aid deprived children in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The money is spent on basic services for children and mothers, including health care, clean water supply, improved nutrition, education and social services.
