Conservancy’s Cup Is Half Full

While Myron Levin’s article in today’s Valley Section correctly reports on Gov. Deukmejian’s veto of $10 million for the Santa Susana Mountains project, the real story lies in his support for the full $30-million appropriation of Proposition 70 money specifically earmarked for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
This action signals that the governor is moving ahead to implement the will of the voters when they resoundingly approved Prop. 70 on June 7.
Indeed we were disappointed by the Santa Susana Mountains project veto. We had hoped to get the acquisition program moving immediately. But this action should not overshadow the bipartisan consensus that has emerged regarding the great majority of Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy funding.
