Two long-distance telephone companies--SouthernNet of Atlanta and Teleconnect of Cedar Rapids, Iowa--agreed to combine their resources into a new Atlanta-based holding company that would be the nation’s fourth-largest long-distance carrier (after AT&T;, MCI and US Sprint). The new entity would serve about 400,000 customers in 31 states and Washington and would retain the partner’s present regional orientation. Teleconnect operates in 21 states, mainly in the Midwest and SouthernNet operates in 10 Southeastern states and Washington.
