Pauma Valley
One man was arrested and 20 others were cited when sheriff’s deputies surprised a crowd at a Pauma Valley cockfight Sunday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Suzanne Hatcher, the men were at a cockfight in an orange grove in the 35100 block of Rincon Springs Road. Hatcher said Felipe Medina, 31, was keeping watch at California 76 and Rincon Springs Road when deputies arrived, but deputies prevented him from radioing a warning. However, a number of those in the crowd did escape.
Benito Burgos, 42, owner of the property, was cited for possession of fighting birds, as well as for contributing to the delinquency of minors, according to Hatcher. Genero Torres was arrested for possession of a firearm, she said.
The San Diego Humane Society took custody of 36 live birds valued at $500 to $2,000 each, and one carcass, Hatcher said.
Sheriff’s deputies confiscated equipment, cages and surgical equipment valued at $5,000 to $8,000.
