Compaq Computer Corp. posted second-quarter net income of $59 million, a 91% jump from the year-ago quarter. Sales were up 71%. First-half profit was $105 million, more than double what it was a year ago. Houston-based Compaq, which manufactures portable personal computers, said the success of two desktop PCs introduced last month--Deskpro 386/25 and Deskpro 386s--and a $9.7-million pretax increase in the value of an investment contributed to the gains.
