Nomads Lose in WSA Playoffs on Penalty Kicks

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the San Diego Nomads, 2-1, Saturday night on sudden-death penalty kicks after overtime in the Western Soccer Alliance playoffs.

San Jose outshot San Diego, 6-5, in nine rounds of penalty kicks. In the final round, Jacques Ladoceur, formerly of the Sockers, scored for San Jose. The Nomads’ Brad Stratton then struck the post with his attempt to end the game.

San Jose will play at Seattle for the WSA title next Saturday.

The Nomads’ Steve Boardman had tied the score with just 30 seconds left in regulation on a pass from Rene Ortiz. Tomas Boy scored in the 19th minute on a penalty kick for San Jose.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Collegiate Baseball League will hold its fourth annual all-star game today at 2 p.m. at San Diego State’s Smith Field.

The San Diego team will play a team from Orange County’s Metro League in a game involving college and junior college players from schools across the nation who are competing in the San Diego and Orange County summer leagues.

The leagues are two of eight in the country that are NCAA sanctioned and receive an annual funding grant from Major League Baseball.

There is no charge for today’s game.

BASKETBALL

Julie Doria scored 20 points as Justice For All beat Everlasting, 88-60, in a Supreme Court League game at the San Ysidro Community Center. MiraCosta College’s Lisa Carrillo scored 32 for Everlasting. In other games, former Grossmont College player Kevin Celestine scored 58 and teammate Weaver Deshang 54 as Understanding beat The Crown, 143-136, despite Lorenzo Romar’s 54 points. San Diego State’s Mitch McMullen scored 36 as Courageous Endurance beat Pious Players, 155-87.

TRACK AND FIELD

Kettrell Berry of the U.S. Marine Corps won four races at an all-comers meet at Balboa Stadium. Berry won the 100 meters in 10.82 seconds, the 200 in 21.99, the 400 in 48.99 and the 110 high hurdles in 15.05.
