El Camino Track Coach in New Post
Dave Shannon, coach of the El Camino College track and cross-country programs, has been named assistant to Dr. James Schwartz, the athletic director.
Schwartz, dean of physical education and athletics, said Shannon will be released from 60% of his teaching responsibilities to perform his new duties. Shannon will continue to coach the men’s and women’s track and cross-country teams.
Schwartz has served as athletic director since 1978, when Proposition 13 forced El Camino to cut costs and eliminate the positions of men’s and women’s athletic directors.
“Down the road, I would hope that we could get back to a full-time athletic director,†Schwartz said. “Until then, it’s probably going to remain this way for a while. I’m thankful that we did get some help.â€
