The State : Police Arrest Demonstrators
About 150 anti-abortion demonstrators were arrested after blockading a Planned Parenthood clinic in Daly City south of San Francisco, an act they claimed was the first of a series planned on the West Coast. Nearby, a smaller group called Women’s Choice, which favors a woman’s right to choose an abortion, held a counterdemonstration. Planned Parenthood staff members were prevented from entering the Daly City clinic for more than an hour while protesters formed a circle around the building. Most sat or kneeled. One of them waved an American flag and others carried signs, including one reading, “Protect the Unborn.†The anti-abortion protest was coordinated by Operation Rescue-Northern California, which a spokeswoman said was modeled after a New York group. The protesters were cited by police and released.
