Fires caused by a heat wave have destroyed 2,500 acres of forest in southern Yugoslavia, local officials said Friday.

The fires also detonated old land mines and shells that had been buried since World War II, they said.

Daytime temperatures in Macedonia have regularly exceeded 104 since early July.
