Chilean Gets 1st U.S. Showing
A one-man show of the works of Pablo Campos opened Saturday and continues through Aug. 27 at the Ivey Gallery. Campos is well-known in his native Chile, but this is his first U.S. showing. He lives in Tujunga, where he creates abstract mixed-media pieces, including colorful one-of-a-kind silk-screens and works on wood, steel and brass. (The Ivey Gallery, 154 N. SHOCKING RETROSPECTIVE: Ceramist Beatrice Wood, 95, is the subject of a retrospective at Anca Colbert Fine Arts Ltd. through July 31.
“Shock†features more than 50 works on paper by the Ojai resident, including pencil drawings, watercolors, lithographs, book illustrations and a small selection of figurative ceramic tiles.
In addition, the gallery offers a photographic study of the artist by Marlene Wallace and, on request, a 30-minute documentary, “Special People: Beatrice Wood,†a gold medal winner at the 1987 International Film and Television Festival in New York.
The exhibition coincides with the publication of Wood’s latest book, “Pinching Spaniards†(Topa Topa Press), a collection of letters and original illustrations recounting a trip to Spain and Portugal in 1956. The book is available at the gallery.

HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS: Paintings, drawings, collages and watercolors by longtime Hollywood artist and writer Stephen Longstreet make up “Hollywood, the Dream That Swallowed the World†at Gallery 170. Longstreet, 83, worked with many of the performers depicted in the show. Starting in 1930 and running through 1988, the works include two drawings of Al Jolson autographed by the star, a collage and drawing from 1940 featuring W. C. Fields, two studies of Greta Garbo, a collage and drawing of Elvis Presley and a large collage of Billie Holiday done from a drawing which now hangs in the Smithsonian.
Also featured is a Western-themed drawing created when Longstreet collaborated with William Faulkner to write the screenplay for “Stallion Road,†starring Ronald Reagan.
