WASHINGTON — Operating rates at American factories, mines and utilities rose in June to 83.1%, the third consecutive monthly increase and the highest level in more than eight years, the government said today.
The Federal Reserve Board said the 0.2 percentage point rise from the May level put operating rates at their highest levels since March, 1980, when industry operated at 83.7% of capacity. Rising operating rates, if unchecked, are considered by analysts to represent a threat of inflation.
