An Israeli soldier shot and killed a Palestinian in a rare attack near Tel Aviv. Palestinian sources said they believed it was the first time in the seven-month-old uprising that a Palestinian had been killed within the pre-1967 borders of Israel. According to the Israeli army, Pvt. Yossi Haddas, 18, opened fire after a Palestinian identified as Salim Mahzoul, 21, of the village of Jatt jumped him and tried to wrest away his weapon. Authorities, meanwhile, lifted a 10-day curfew on the Christian Arab town of Beit Sahur, a community of 12,000 near Bethlehem. Mayor Hanna Atrash said the curfew was lifted after the area’s Greek Orthodox Church leader appealed to the Israeli governor to end the restriction.
