Animals Guarded After Police Find Many Others Dead

About 120 surviving chickens, ducks, rabbits and pigeons that had been packed in unventilated boxes after being bought at an auction were in the care of the Pasadena Humane Society on Sunday.

Pasadena police found the animals by chance Saturday when they responded to a disturbance call, unrelated to the animals, on North Catalina Avenue.

Two Pasadena men and a Riverside woman had bought 144 animals in Lancaster, Sgt. John Olquin said, stuffed them into cardboard boxes and crates, and wedged them into a small truck.

They were unloading some of the animals at the residence of one of the men when officers came up to question the homeowner about the disturbance call. The officers then saw dozens of dead animals “thrown on the driveway or in a trash can,” Olquin said. “It was a pitiful sight.” Many of the surviving animals were bloodied and in shock.

The people were “sort of indifferent” to the animals’ suffering, Olquin added. Their names were not released because an investigation is continuing, he said. Pasadena Sgt. Dennis Petersen said a complaint will be sought for cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.
